Thorn Lighting are recruiting for an Electrical Design Engineer to take responsibility for completion of development tasks related to electrical product design in accordance with the New Product Development Process. The role is based at our Spennymoor offices and would be ideal for someone looking for stability and longevity in a role where they can not only work on their own project work but cross train in other design areas to be able to provide other departmental support. Responsibilities You will design, build and optimise electrical circuits and systems for professional lighting products, including LED drivers, control systems, sensors and power management solutions. You should collaborate closely with mechanical, optical and firmware engineering teams throughout the entire product development lifecycle. You will evaluate technical feasibility, select components and manage risk to enable confident, well‑informed early‑stage design decisions. You can capture, interpret and validate customer requirements, translating them into robust and practical engineering solutions. You will drive prototype build, testing, validation and troubleshooting, ensuring products meet performance targets and comply with relevant international standards. You will analyse competitor products and perform functional decomposition to identify innovation opportunities and competitive advantage. You will champion continuous improvement, contributing to cost optimisation, sustainability initiatives and ongoing performance enhancement. You will maintain accurate engineering documentation and influence design direction, actively participating in design reviews, R&D workshops and the adoption of AI‑enabled development tools. You will also support the Product Support & Maintenance (PSM) and Custom Product Design (CPD) teams in addition to the NPD Process. Skills & Experience You hold a degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline, providing a strong technical foundation. You have strong CAD/CAE expertise, with hands‑on experience producing, analysing, and refining engineering designs. It would be advantageous if you are formally trained in any of FEA, GD&T, Thermal Simulation or Mouldflow Analysis. You are familiar with the use of internal software for LED ratings, eg. LUMIR, LED dB. You bring industrial and manufacturing experience, having supported product development across low‑ to high‑volume production environments. You have successfully delivered multiple design and development projects, with practical experience in detailed electrical component design.
